Job Description
The RF and Microwave Engineer at Planet will develop next-generation onboard and ground radios and antenna systems for small satellites, focusing on improving performance, reliability, and cost. This role involves PCB layout, collaboration with cross-functional teams, and conducting testing to ensure mission success.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop next-generation onboard and ground radios and antenna systems for satellite communications
- Design S-band through Ka-band radios and various antennas
- Conduct PCB layout projects and interface with cross-functional teams
- Perform environmental and EMC testing on communication subsystems
- Collaborate with systems engineering, missions, and manufacturing teams to ensure mission success
- Own RF and microwave hardware transceiver and circuit design
- Conduct RF and microwave system design, link budgets, and interference analysis
- Design and test antennas using simulation tools
- Validate and verify radios and antennas pre-shipment and post-launch
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE)
- 4 years of engineering experience designing and maturing RF/MW systems, transceivers, antennas, and/or Software Defined Radios (SDRs) to market
- Strong fundamentals in RF/MW, electromagnetics, and signal processing
- Proven track record of supporting and criticizing RF layout, RF circuit design, and component selection
- Ability to conduct environmental and EMC testing on communication subsystems and prepare them for flight
- Experience with RF/MW hardware transceiver and circuit design, simulation (Spice, ADS), instrumentation, test, and characterization
- Experience with RF/MW system design, link budgets, and interference analysis
- Experience with antenna design, simulation, and testing (ADS, HFSS)
- Knowledge of digital communications theory and associated signal processing algorithms for both narrowband and wideband data transmission systems
- Experience with Software Defined Radio (SDR) platforms and respective signal processing libraries (e.g., GNURadio)
- Excellent documentation, presentation, and communication skills
- Ability to work up to 4 days a week at the headquarters in San Francisco, CA
- Ability to access export-controlled information without additional export licensing being required by the Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls

US base salary range of 144,500 - 180,600 USD
