Key Responsibilities

  • Develop physically-accurate, reliable, and fast models and algorithms for robot simulation.
  • Collaborate with software engineers and research scientists to enhance simulation tools.
  • Solve modeling, mathematical, and implementation problems to improve simulation accuracy and software performance.
  • Translate physical and mathematical phenomena into software models.
  • Contribute to the publication of research findings in scientific journals.
  • Implement new capabilities into the open source robotics software Drake.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a university or college program related to robotics, computer science, engineering, or a similar field.
  • Experience working with physically-accurate, reliable, and fast models and algorithms relevant to simulation and robotics, demonstrated through coursework, projects, or prior internships.
  • Ability to collaborate with other software engineers and research scientists to develop models and algorithms for robotics simulation.
  • Proficiency in solving difficult modeling, mathematical, and implementation problems with a focus on accuracy of simulation results, and reliability and performance of software.
  • Skill in distilling physical and mathematical phenomena into clear software models and making them operational.
  • Experience with open source robotics software development, particularly in C or C++.
  • Knowledge of multibody dynamics, rigid and soft body computational mechanics, and numerical methods such as numerical integration of DAEs, time stepping, and event handling.
  • Understanding of physics-based simulation tools for robots and vehicles interacting with environments, emphasizing high-fidelity and high-performance software.
  • Ability to contribute to validation of simulation accuracy and verification of software and numerical methods.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for publishing in scientific journals and documenting software capabilities.
  • Availability to commit to a 12-week summer internship in 2026, with a hybrid in-office work arrangement.
  • Legal authorization to work in the location of the internship (implied by the context, though not explicitly stated).
