Job Description
The Research Scientist Engineer in Mobile Manipulation at Toyota Research Institute focuses on developing and integrating robotic systems capable of performing complex, human-level manipulation tasks, navigating among people, and learning adaptively in real-world environments using machine learning and advanced perception, prediction, and action techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and integrate systems enabling robots to perform complex, human-level mobile manipulation tasks.
- Leverage machine learning to combine perception, prediction, and action for robust robot behaviors.
- Deploy and validate robotic systems in real-world environments, including homes.
- Use simulation and large data sets to bootstrap and improve robot performance.
- Quantitatively evaluate system performance and develop high-quality, robust solutions.
Requirements
- Experience developing and deploying systems in real-world environments, particularly in the context of robotics, perception, prediction, and action integration.
- Strong knowledge and experience in machine learning, including leveraging large amounts of data and bootstrapping from simulation to develop robust, reactive, and coordinated robot behaviors.
- Proficiency in developing systems that enable robots to perform complex, human-level mobile manipulation tasks, navigate with and among people, and learn and adapt over time.
- Ability to develop, validate, and deploy robotic systems in real-world environments, including in and around homes.
- Experience working with perception, prediction, and action modules in robotic systems, with an emphasis on robustness and reactivity.
- Demonstrated ability to identify key technologies, develop high-quality systems, and quantitatively evaluate performance of robotic systems.
- Educational background in a relevant field such as engineering, computer science, robotics, or related disciplines (implied by the need for technical expertise).
- Experience working within a fast-moving environment that involves high-risk innovation and learning from failures.
- Ability to collaborate with a team supported by core expertise in machine learning, cloud computing, software, and hardware.
