Job Description

A research internship focused on developing safe and effective human-AI shared control systems for advanced driver assistance, involving planning, control algorithms, and machine learning to enhance vehicle safety and performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop novel planning and control algorithms to ensure safety in challenging driving scenarios
  • Improve performance of existing shared control algorithms under uncertain conditions
  • Implement data-driven machine learning approaches to shared control with safety guarantees
  • Research and explore human-AI pairing methods to support safe, intuitive, and responsive shared driving systems

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a university program in a relevant field such as computer science, robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Experience or coursework in developing planning and control algorithms for vehicle or robot systems.
  • Knowledge of machine learning, optimization, and control theory as applied to vehicle safety and performance capabilities.
  • Ability to develop novel planning and control algorithms to guarantee safety amid challenging driving scenarios.
  • Experience or coursework in implementing data-driven machine learning approaches to shared control with safety guarantees.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with professional researchers and team members.
  • Applicants with relevant publications in the fields of automated driving, human-AI collaboration, or related areas are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Availability to participate in a 12-week summer internship in Summer 2026, with the internship being a hybrid in-office role at Toyota Research Institute headquarters.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States (implied by the need to work at TRI headquarters and the mention of U.S. employment laws).
