Job Description
The Senior Product Design Mechanical Engineer at Samsara is responsible for leading industrial design, architecture, and design decisions for hardware products, working closely with cross-functional teams and customers to create innovative, reliable, and scalable solutions for industrial IoT applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide the architecture of multiple products through industrial design studies considering environment, usability, and aesthetics.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product Management, EE, FW, EPM, and Hardware leadership to make design tradeoffs and decisions.
- Support the development process from prototyping to field validation, ensuring performance, cost, and schedule goals are met.
- Research industry trends, fabrication techniques, and quality assurance processes to inform product design.
- Evaluate system feature tradeoffs and create system specifications for development.
- Mentor other engineers in industrial design and architecture practices.
- Ensure reliability testing and monitor product field performance to maintain quality standards.
- Ship successful high-volume hardware products by managing design, manufacturability, and cost considerations.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of experience shipping high-volume hardware programs at scale with ODM and JDM partners overseas.
- Systems design expertise includes thermals, rugged enclosures, antennas, and batteries.
- Proven record navigating tradeoffs between design, manufacturability, schedule, and cost.
- Experience working on a wide variety of systems for different use cases and environments including automotive, indoor, and outdoor industrial areas.
- BS or MS degree in mechanical engineering.
- Ability to travel up to 20% when necessary.
- Experience with design for telematics or Vehicle environments (preferred).
- High-volume product experience (preferred).
- Camera module experience (preferred).
