Job Description
A senior coastal ecologist role focused on leading ecological restoration projects, conducting advanced scientific analysis, mentoring junior staff, and supporting business development efforts in coastal and marine environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior technical expert and project team leader in coastal ecological projects
- Manage interdisciplinary field teams and oversee scientific data collection and analysis
- Ensure data quality, reporting, and compliance with technical, regulatory, and quality standards
- Lead ecological efforts in coastal environments, including habitat analysis, mitigation planning, and sampling protocol development
- Mentor junior scientists and guide technical strategy across projects
- Collaborate with clients, regulatory agencies, and internal teams to develop assessment strategies and secure projects
- Contribute to proposal development, scientific presentations, and report review
- Support business development by identifying and pursuing new coastal restoration opportunities
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, marine biology, or a related field
- 10 years of scientific experience, or 8 years of scientific experience with an advanced degree
- Strong project leadership skills, including field planning, workload management, and scientific coordination
- Client-facing experience with technical proposal development and scientific presentation
- Significant experience with scientific data collection, QA QC, analysis, and reporting
- Advanced knowledge in at least one ecological or environmental scientific discipline, and broad knowledge across several disciplines
- Proficiency in GIS tools, scientific software, and data visualization
- Experience in collaborating with regulatory agencies, interpreting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and applying permitting frameworks
- Ability to lead and train multidisciplinary field teams in dynamic environments
- Experience mentoring junior staff and fostering technical growth in others
- Ability to build strong client relationships, identify strategic opportunities, and support coastal restoration and resilience projects
- Willingness to work from the Fort Lauderdale, FL office on a hybrid schedule, with approximately 20-30% of time spent in the field across Florida
- Willingness to travel and stay overnight as needed for project support
