Job Description
The Scientist III at RES is an environmental professional responsible for leading ecological restoration projects, conducting field data collection, analyzing data, mentoring team members, and preparing technical reports to support habitat restoration and conservation efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and train field teams in sampling protocols, safety procedures, and data collection
- Operate, maintain, and ensure accuracy of scientific equipment used in the field
- Collect, manage, and analyze large datasets with rigorous quality control
- Write technical reports and interpret technical documentation
- Evaluate sites to identify regulatory and technical requirements and perform risk analyses
- Contribute to project design, sequencing, and scheduling of field activities
- Communicate project updates and findings to clients and stakeholders
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in natural or physical sciences; an advanced degree is preferred.
- Five years of relevant experience, or three years of relevant experience with an advanced degree.
- Advanced knowledge in at least one scientific discipline such as wetlands, hydrology, soils, stream morphology, ecology, fisheries, flora, or fauna.
- Intermediate knowledge across several related scientific disciplines.
- Experience with GIS and scientific analysis software.
- Proficiency in functional assessment methodologies and calculations.
- Hands-on field experience with scientific equipment such as YSI multimeters, turbidimeters, and GPS.
- Experience operating and maintaining scientific equipment used in the field.
- Ability to review and interpret technical documentation including standard operating procedures, monitoring plans, maps, and laboratory results.
- Ability to collect, manage, and analyze large datasets with rigorous quality control to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Experience writing advanced technical reports with minimal revisions required.
- Ability to mentor junior staff in data analysis and report preparation.
- Experience evaluating sites to identify regulatory and technical requirements, perform risk analyses, and provide insights to inform project strategies.
- Experience leading and training field teams in sampling protocols, safety procedures, and data collection.
- Ability to operate and maintain scientific equipment such as YSI multimeters, turbidimeters, and GPS.
- Experience communicating directly with clients, summarizing project needs, and providing timely status updates.
- Ability to contribute to project design discussions, sequencing, and scheduling of field activities.
- Willingness to spend 70-80% of work time in the field during peak season with occasional overnight travel in a five-state region.
