Job Description

The Environmental Field Equipment Operator is responsible for performing ecological restoration activities such as operating heavy machinery, managing invasive species, and supporting habitat restoration projects in outdoor natural landscapes across the Midwest, contributing to environmental sustainability and ecosystem health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized field equipment such as excavators, skid steers, tractors, ATVs, and herbicide application equipment
  • Perform ecological restoration activities including invasive species control, native species protection, site clearing, planting, and seeding
  • Maintain and service field equipment, troubleshoot and diagnose issues
  • Use mapping tools to track and document field progress
  • Implement erosion and sediment control measures
  • Assist with maintenance and mowing of solar fields and other landscapes
  • Load and unload materials at nurseries and project sites

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 1 year of experience in ecological restoration, landscaping, agriculture, or related work
  • Ability to understand the project plans, details, and specifications
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, walk on uneven ground, and climb onto construction equipment
  • Experience with the repair and maintenance of small engines and equipment
  • Mid-level ability to troubleshoot and diagnose field equipment issues, including knowledge of auto, truck, and construction equipment maintenance schedules, fluid requirements, and basic diagnostic processes
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment including excavators (10,000-60,000 lbs), skid steers with standard and forestry attachments, small to medium-sized tractors (40-125 hp) with various implements, ATVs, zero-turn lawn mowers, and equipment used for herbicide application
  • Ability to operate chainsaws, gas-powered brush cutters, and augers
  • Ability to calibrate native seed drills and herbicide preparation equipment
  • Experience with loading plant and project materials at nurseries and other suppliers
  • Knowledge of native and invasive plant species and ecological restoration methods
  • Knowledge of appropriate mixing and application of herbicides for managing invasive species
  • Knowledge of proper planting and seeding techniques
  • Experience with invasive brush clearing, tree felling, planting, seeding, erosion, and sediment controls
  • Experience with maintenance and mowing of solar fields through equipment operation and herbicide application
  • Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting 50 lbs, walking on uneven ground, and climbing onto construction equipment
