Job Description

The Restoration Operator role involves working outdoors to restore ecosystems by operating various equipment, performing invasive species control, planting, seeding, and site maintenance, while contributing to environmental sustainability efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized equipment such as excavators, skid steers, tractors, chainsaws, and herbicide application tools in the field.
  • Perform invasive species removal, tree felling, planting, seeding, and erosion control activities.
  • Maintain and service field equipment, including troubleshooting and diagnosing issues.
  • Use mapping tools to track and document field progress.
  • Assist with site clearing, native species protection, and invasive species management.
  • Load and transport materials between nurseries and project sites.

Requirements

  • High School degree or GED
  • At least 1 year of experience working on natural resources, farming, or water resource infrastructure projects
  • Experience with the repair and maintenance of small engines and equipment
  • Ability to understand project plans, details, and specifications
  • An up-to-date DOT medical card
  • Reliable means of transportation to get to the field office
  • Ability to travel up to 50% within the Midwest Region, including overnight stays of 2 to 4 nights for some projects
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment including excavators (10,000 to 60,000 lbs), skid steers with standard and forestry attachments, small to medium-sized tractors (40 to 125 hp) with various implements, ATVs, zero-turn lawn mowers, and equipment used for herbicide application
  • Mid-level ability to troubleshoot and diagnose field equipment issues
  • Knowledge of auto, truck, and construction equipment maintenance schedules, fluid requirements, and basic diagnostic processes
  • Ability to operate chainsaws, gas-powered brush cutters, and augers
  • Ability to calibrate native seed drills and herbicide preparation equipment
  • Experience using mapping equipment and apps to track field progress
