Job Description

The Power Electronics Controls Engineer at Redwood Materials is responsible for designing, prototyping, and launching high-power, high-voltage power converters for energy storage applications, contributing to the development of efficient and manufacturable battery-related electrical systems in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and launch high-power power converters for energy storage applications.
  • Select and compare topologies, control algorithms, semiconductors, and magnetics to optimize efficiency, cost, and reliability.
  • Create accurate control and thermal models to inform software and mechanical development.
  • Perform circuit board layout and component selection for manufacturability and electrical performance.
  • Supervise and perform detailed PCB layout of high-power electronics using CAD tools like Altium.
  • Mentor test technicians in designing tests, interpreting results, and defining part maturity criteria.

Requirements

  • Experience in high-voltage power electronics design up to 2000VDC and 480VAC, including the ability to quantitatively compare and select topologies, control algorithms, semiconductors, and magnetics while respecting engineering constraints such as efficiency, cost, reliability, and simplicity.
  • Proficiency in creating highly accurate time-domain control and thermal models of circuits to inform software and mechanical development.
  • Working understanding of microprocessor selection, electrical insulation, and thermal interface in high-power circuitry design.
  • Ability to perform critical parts of powertrain PCB layout yourself, with a focus on circuit board layout in high-power conversion.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus in power electronics.
  • At least 7 years of experience in electrical engineering, with a strong focus on power conversion or energy storage products, ideally for mass production of 10,000 units per year or higher.
  • Experience in high-voltage design up to 2000VDC and 480VAC.
  • Familiarity with techniques for efficiency optimization in power electronics.
  • Basic knowledge of control theory and embedded systems.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in rapid prototyping iterations based on customer, supplier, and co-worker feedback.
  • Deep understanding of power electronics topologies and fundamentals, including AC/DC and DC/DC conversions.
  • Experience with semiconductor selection, gate drive, and protection circuit design.
  • Ability to mentor test technicians in designing tests, interpreting test results, and defining part maturity criteria.
  • Proficiency with basic electrical engineering tools such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Proven track record as an electrical engineer with hands-on design, prototyping, and launch experience in medium-to-high volume production.
  • Ability to select circuit components for manufacturability and electrical function.
  • Ability to perform detailed schematic capture in Altium or related CAD software.
  • Ability to supervise and occasionally perform detailed layout of high-power electronics PCBs in Altium or related CAD software.
  • Physical ability to perform essential job functions safely and successfully, including climbing, standing, stooping, and typing, consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other standards.
  • Willingness to work in challenging conditions that may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes while protected by PPE.
  • Availability to work occasional weekends, nights, or be on-call as a regular part of the job.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional travel as required.
