Job Description
The Power Electronics Controls Engineer at Redwood Materials is responsible for designing, prototyping, and launching high-power, high-voltage power converters for energy storage applications, contributing to the development of efficient and manufacturable electrical systems in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, prototype, and launch high-power, high-voltage power converters for energy storage applications.
- Select and optimize power electronics topologies, control algorithms, semiconductors, and magnetics to meet efficiency, cost, and reliability goals.
- Create accurate control and thermal models to inform software and mechanical development.
- Perform circuit board layout and supervise PCB design for high-power electronics.
- Select circuit components for manufacturability and electrical performance.
- Perform schematic capture and detailed layout of high-power electronics using CAD software.
- Mentor test technicians in designing tests, interpreting results, and defining part maturity criteria.
Requirements
- Experience in high-voltage power electronics design up to 2000VDC and 480VAC, including familiarity with techniques for efficiency optimization.
- 7 years of experience in electrical engineering with a strong focus in power conversion or energy storage products, ideally for mass production of 10,000 units per year or higher.
- Proven hands-on experience in electrical circuit design, prototyping, and launching products into medium-to-high volume production.
- Ability to create highly accurate time-domain control and thermal models of circuits to inform software and mechanical development.
- Working understanding of microprocessor selection, electrical insulation, and thermal interface in high-power circuitry.
- Experience in selecting circuit components for manufacturability as well as electrical function.
- Ability to perform detailed schematic capture using Altium or related CAD software.
- Ability to supervise and occasionally perform detailed layout of high-power electronics PCBs in Altium or related CAD software.
- Experience with semiconductor selections, gate drive, and protection circuit design.
- Skilled in working with basic electrical engineering tools such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and signal generators.
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills related to power electronics and energy storage products.
- Experience in rapid iterations on prototypes based on customer, supplier, and co-worker feedback.
- Knowledge of power electronics topologies and fundamentals, including AC-DC and DC-DC conversions.
- Ability to select circuit components that meet both electrical and manufacturability requirements.
- Physical ability to perform essential job functions safely and successfully, including climbing, standing, stooping, and typing, in environments that may include noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE.
- Willingness to work in challenging working conditions and occasionally work weekends, nights, or be on-call, with occasional travel as required.
Benefits & Perks
Salary range: $153,000 - $248,500 USD
