A mechanical engineer at Redwood Materials will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating high-power energy storage products, leading mechanical design efforts from concept to mass production, and eventually managing a mechanical engineering team in a fast-paced startup environment.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and integrate mechanical components and systems for high-power energy storage products
Perform mechanical analysis (CFD, FEA, thermal) to validate designs and ensure performance
Collaborate with electrical and systems engineers for seamless mechanical integration
Select materials and components in coordination with suppliers to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness
Lead and manage a mechanical engineering team, including recruiting and mentoring
Drive innovation and solve technical challenges related to mechanical systems at scale
Contribute to the development of tools, infrastructure, and design practices for a growing team
Requirements
BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
7 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a strong focus in power conversion or energy storage products, ideally for mass production of 10,000 units per year or higher
Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks and analysis tools including CFD and FEA
Experience developing tools, infrastructure, and design practices for a growing team
Proven track record as a senior mechanical engineer with hands-on design, prototyping, and launch experience in medium-to-high volume production
Understanding of the relationship between high voltage electronics and the mechanical systems that support and surround them, including insulation systems and thermal systems
Ability to perform mechanical analysis such as CFD, FEA, thermal analysis to validate designs and ensure performance under real-world conditions
Ability to select materials and components, working closely with suppliers and vendors to ensure cost-effective, high-quality solutions
Experience leading and executing the mechanical design and development of high-volume, high-power energy conversion products from concept to deployment
Experience acting as the primary mechanical engineering expert, driving innovation and solving technical challenges at a large scale
Experience managing project goals and timelines as a hands-on engineering manager
Ability to lead and mentor a mechanical engineering team, including recruiting and managing team members
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships with all levels of the organization and presenting to internal and external executives
Physical ability to perform essential job functions safely and successfully, consistent with ADA, FMLA, and other standards, including meeting productivity standards
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance
Ability to work in challenging conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes, while protected by PPE
Essential physical activities such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing
Willingness to work occasional weekends, nights, or be on-call as part of the job
