A Senior Legal Counsel specializing in IP prosecution and litigation, responsible for managing a large patent portfolio, advising technical teams on IP risks, and overseeing patent disputes to protect the company's technological innovations and strategic interests.
Key Responsibilities
Manage a global patent portfolio of over 2,000 matters and oversee outside counsel in prosecution efforts
Conduct strategic analysis of patent portfolio to align with business priorities
Advise engineering teams on IP risks, third-party patents, and technical disclosures
Provide recommendations to executive leadership on portfolio direction, litigation activity, and emerging risks
Manage outside litigation counsel and technical experts in patent disputes
Coordinate technical analysis and develop processes to improve patent dispute work quality and efficiency
Requirements
JD from an ABA-accredited law school and admitted to a U.S. state bar organization for the jurisdiction where the candidate is working and in good standing
Registered and in good standing to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
12 years of legal experience in patent strategy and patent management in-house at technology companies and/or at major law firms
Prior experience in Computer Sciences, Compute Engineering, Software, Information Systems or related field is preferred
Ability to do strategic analysis of patent portfolio to align with business priorities
Experience managing a patent portfolio of over 2,000 matters
Experience overseeing outside counsel in all prosecution matters including drafting, office actions, appeals, foreign filing decisions, and annuities
Experience conducting competitive analysis on company’s patent portfolio
Experience managing outside litigation counsel, technical experts, and discovery matters
Ability to manage ongoing patent charting on competitors of the company’s patent portfolio
Ability to provide input on defenses, risk exposure, and settlement strategy
Ability to coordinate technical analysis with internal teams
Ability to establish and maintain a process to improve predictability, efficiency, and quality of patent dispute work
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including effectively presenting complex information to senior executives such as Engineering, Marketing, Management, and Sales teams
Strategic thinking and risk assessment abilities
