Job Description
The Autonomous Vehicle Operator (AVO) is responsible for operating self-driving test vehicles in various traffic conditions, collecting data, troubleshooting operational issues, and ensuring safety and compliance while supporting the development and training of autonomous driving technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate autonomous test vehicles in manual and autonomous modes under diverse traffic conditions
- Collect and provide detailed feedback on data from vehicle operations to engineering teams
- Troubleshoot operational issues in real-time and collaborate with dispatch to resolve them
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance tasks
- Educate the public about autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors
- Conduct high-profile ridealongs for leadership, stakeholders, and engineers while ensuring safety and professionalism
- Monitor onboard safety and navigational systems, maintaining situational awareness
Requirements
- Possession of a current valid California driver’s license and having been in possession of a US license for at least 3 years
- Ability to reliably work 5 days a week on one of the specified shifts: Morning 6:00am-2:30pm PT (Friday to Tuesday), Afternoon 2:00pm-10:30pm PT (Friday to Tuesday), or Overnight shift with similar hours
- Ability to operate a vehicle in manual and autonomous mode for up to 8 hours per day in diverse traffic conditions while adhering to proper safety and operational driving procedures
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug test
- Ability to perform daily vehicle inspection checks before and after missions
- Ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks, including washing vehicles and putting air in tires
- Ability to operate standard field equipment such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones for documentation, training, and real-time workflow procedures
- Ability to troubleshoot operational issues in real time and collaborate with Mission Operations dispatch team to resolve issues and meet mileage collection targets
- Ability to interact with members of the public to educate them on autonomous vehicle technologies and behaviors
- Ability to serve as a company ambassador by conducting high-profile ridealongs for senior leadership, stakeholders, investors, and engineers, demonstrating professionalism and safety
- Ability to monitor onboard safety and navigational systems while maintaining constant situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols
- Physical ability to sit for 3 to 4 hours at a time in an enclosed vehicle for up to 8 hours per day, with occasional bending, squatting, stretching, and lifting up to 25 pounds
- Physical ability to perform side and up/down movement of the head, neck, back, and shoulders necessary to operate a vehicle safely
- Physical ability to hold and grasp with hands and use foot pedals frequently when driving
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including comfortable communication through online collaboration platforms such as Slack and Google Meet
- Strong problem-solving skills, remaining calm and resourceful under pressure to troubleshoot operational issues
- Strong collaboration and time management skills, with the ability to work independently or in small groups without direct supervision
- Self-driven and goal-oriented, able to adapt to frequent changes and evolving conditions
- Proven record of reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
