A Technical Writer at Planet is responsible for creating and maintaining clear, accurate, and developer-friendly documentation for the company's products and APIs, enabling customers and internal teams to effectively use Planet's data and platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Create and maintain high-quality, developer-focused technical documentation for Planet's products, APIs, and workflows
Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineers, and Solutions teams to understand new features and translate them into clear content
Review and improve content authored by engineering and product teams for clarity, accuracy, and consistency
Own documentation planning, delivery, and ongoing updates for assigned product areas
Continuously enhance documentation usability based on customer feedback, support trends, and product changes
Apply and contribute to documentation standards, structure, and information architecture
Requirements
Four years of experience writing technical documentation for developer or technical audiences.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
Experience creating original technical documentation and editing or reviewing content authored by engineers or product teams.
Ability to learn complex products quickly and work with engineers to extract technical details and real-world use cases.
Hands-on experience with APIs and developer tools, including REST, authentication, and SDK usage.
Working knowledge of Python and JavaScript sufficient to understand workflows, write and test example code, and validate documentation.
Experience working in a Git-based documentation workflow using tools such as Visual Studio Code, including commits, merge requests, and version control.
Deep sense of ownership with high standards for clarity, accuracy, structure, and maintainability.
Experience documenting complex technical systems, APIs, or data platforms.
Application of documentation standards, structure, and information architecture to ensure high-quality, consistent content.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams such as Education, Support, and Solutions to align content with training materials, onboarding flows, and customer use cases.
Compliance with export control requirements, including the ability to access export-controlled information without additional export licensing, as this position requires access to such information.
