Job Description
A Controls Engineer at Orenda designs, programs, and tests energy control systems for urban energy storage projects, focusing on hardware and software integration, system standardization, and scalability to support the company's mission of making the grid more efficient.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and specify hardware for energy control systems, including panel layouts and network diagrams
- Develop code for controllers, SCADA systems, and networking devices following SDLC processes
- Create standardized, reusable code and hardware templates for scalable fleet management
- Develop documentation such as commissioning procedures, user manuals, and recovery plans
- Build automated software unit tests and establish hardware-in-the-loop testing environments
- Lead factory acceptance testing and manage relationships with vendors and software providers
- Test, commission, and deploy control systems in energy storage projects
- Collaborate with software engineers to design interfaces and utilize cloud infrastructure
Requirements
- B.S. in engineering with 4 years of professional experience designing and implementing controls systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar software for producing detailed electrical schematics and panel layouts
- 3 years experience programming and deploying RTUs, RTACs, or PLCs
- 3 years experience developing Ignition SCADA
- Proficiency in Python programming
- Experience configuring network switches and firewalls, VPNs, VLANs
- Hands-on experience installing and/or wiring controls hardware panels
- Deep understanding of industrial controls protocols DNP3 and Modbus
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills
- Previous projects in the energy industry
- Strong ability to troubleshoot communications, wiring, or software issues in real-time
- A first principles, mathematically-minded approach to new problems
- Obsessed with design standardization and scalability
- Keen attention to detail and a high level of work quality without requiring inspection
- Relentlessly positive attitude, strong work ethic, and sense of humor
