Job Description
The role involves leading the development and deployment of AI components for Nuro's backup autonomy system in self-driving vehicles, including guiding a team of engineers, designing machine learning models for obstacle detection and collision avoidance, and ensuring safety and reliability through testing and integration.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of software engineers, fostering technical excellence and motivation
- Define technical roadmap and strategy for AI components within the backup autonomy system
- Oversee design, development, and deployment of machine learning models for obstacle detection and motion prediction
- Guide data mining and analysis to predict conflicts and inform emergency maneuvers
- Collaborate with controls and behavior teams to ensure seamless integration of emergency modes
- Work with operations and systems teams to validate collision prevention against vehicle standards
- Lead large-scale simulated testing to identify risks and differentiate failure modes of backup systems
- Direct implementation and testing of fallback driving modes, including perception and behavior model adjustments
- Manage project timelines, resources, and deliverables to ensure quality and timely execution
Requirements
- BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math or another quantitative area.
- At least 4 years of industry engineering experience with a significant focus on AI, robotics, autonomous systems, or ADAS.
- At least 2 years of experience in a technical leadership or management role, leading software engineering teams.
- At least 2 years of dedicated expertise in machine learning.
- Strong proficiency in C and Python programming languages.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional technical projects from design to completion.
