Job Description
The Senior IP Counsel at Nuro is responsible for managing the company's patent and trademark portfolio by working closely with technical teams to identify, draft, and file patent applications, providing legal advice on intellectual property matters, and supporting the company's innovation and patent strategy in the autonomous vehicle and robotics sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with technical teams to harvest, document, and prepare patentable ideas and invention disclosures.
- Draft, review, and file patent and trademark applications, managing the patent prosecution process.
- Manage and update the company's IP portfolio, including trademarks and trade secrets.
- Provide strategic advice to internal teams on IP protection and commercial matters.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure innovative products and ideas are properly protected.
- Educate and support inventors and teams in turning ideas into patent applications.
- Coordinate with outside patent counsel for patent prosecution and responses.
- Identify patentable ideas and opportunities to lead technological breakthroughs.
Requirements
- A law degree and an engineering degree.
- At least 7 years of experience as a patent lawyer responsible for end-to-end drafting and filing of patent applications.
- Experience working at an IP law firm, in-house, or both.
- Experience working across hardware, software, and services-related technologies.
- Experience with trademarks and trade secrets is a plus.
- A proven track record of drafting multiple groundbreaking patents that led to significant commercial value.
- Ability to work independently with self-direction, impeccable attention to detail, and high drafting quality and efficiency.
- Experience in executing legal work across areas including patent harvesting sessions, invention disclosure review, patent application preparation and submission, and patent prosecution.
- Experience managing outside patent counsel for preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications, including preparing and timely filing provisional patent applications and handling responses.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with technical teams, inventors, and business teams to protect IP and document ideas.
- Experience in taking partially formed ideas and drawing out the inventive step, identifying patentable ideas, and spotting opportunities for industry leadership and technological breakthroughs.
- Ability to produce polished, high-quality patent applications quickly, including drafting and reviewing invention disclosure forms and providing feedback.
- Excellent organizational skills to track and execute on multiple patent deadlines and manage a patent portfolio.
- A registered U.S. patent attorney and ideally a member of the California Bar; admission in other jurisdictions is a plus.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple responsibilities, and driving process efficiency.
- Strong legal instincts, technical skills, judgment, and business acumen.
- Ability to educate and motivate internal teams on IP issues and patent processes.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, precise, and timely patent documents.
- A passion for making a significant impact through work on autonomous vehicle and robotics technologies.
