Job Description
The Senior IP Counsel at Nuro is responsible for managing the company's patent and trademark portfolio, working closely with technical teams to identify patentable ideas, drafting and filing patent applications, and providing strategic IP advice to support innovation in autonomous vehicle and robotics technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, document, and harvest patentable ideas from technical teams.
- Draft, review, and file patent and trademark applications, including provisional patents.
- Manage and update the company's IP portfolio and coordinate with outside counsel.
- Provide strategic advice on IP protection in commercial and legal matters.
- Educate and collaborate with engineering and business teams to convert ideas into patent applications.
- Conduct invention interviews and prepare high-quality patent applications efficiently.
- Support and implement patent strategy to maintain technological leadership.
- Assist in protecting IP in various commercial and corporate contexts.
Requirements
- A law degree and an engineering degree.
- 7 years of experience as a patent lawyer responsible for end-to-end drafting and filing.
- Experience working at an IP law firm or in-house, or both.
- Experience with hardware, software, and services-related technologies.
- Experience with trademarks and trade secrets is a plus.
- A proven ability to draft and file patent applications both in the U.S. and internationally.
- Experience in taking ideas that may be only partially formed and drawing out the inventive step in that idea.
- A registered U.S. patent attorney license.
- Ideally, membership in the California Bar; admission in other jurisdictions is a plus.
- Excellent legal instincts, engineering know-how, and business acumen.
- Strong technical skills and judgment in patent law and technology.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments, juggling educating teams, helping inventors, and driving patent strategy.
- Highly organized with the ability to track and execute on multiple patent portfolio deadlines.
- Excellent written communication skills, capable of producing polished patent applications quickly.
- Self-starter with the ability to independently drive process and get patents allowed.
- Ability to identify patentable ideas and opportunities to lead industry breakthroughs.
- Experience collaborating cross-functionally with technical teams to protect innovative products and ideas.
- Ability to educate engineers and business teams on IP issues and provide strategic advice.
- Comfortable managing outside patent counsel for preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications, including provisional applications and responses.
