Job Description
The Senior IP Counsel at Nuro is responsible for managing the company's patent and trademark portfolio, collaborating with technical teams to identify patentable ideas, drafting and filing patent applications, and providing strategic IP advice to support innovation in autonomous vehicle and robotics technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Harvest, draft, file, and review patent and trademark applications.
- Manage and update the company's IP portfolio, including trademarks and trade secrets.
- Collaborate with technical teams to document ideas and prepare invention disclosures.
- Provide legal advice on IP issues, patent strategy, and protecting innovations in commercial and legal matters.
- Manage outside counsel for patent prosecution and filings, including provisional applications.
- Educate and support internal teams in turning ideas into patent applications.
- Conduct invention interviews with engineers to identify patentable innovations.
- Ensure timely and efficient patent application processes from idea to filing.
- Support cross-functional teams to protect innovative products and services.
Requirements
- A law degree and an engineering degree.
- 7 years of experience as a patent lawyer responsible for end-to-end drafting and filing.
- Experience working at an IP law firm, in-house, or both.
- Experience working across hardware, software, and services-related technologies.
- Experience with trademarks and trade secrets is a plus.
- A proven ability to draft and file patent applications both in the U.S. and internationally.
- Experience in drafting patent applications for inventions in robotics, artificial intelligence, or autonomous vehicles is a plus.
- A registered U.S. patent attorney and ideally a member of the California Bar; admission in other jurisdictions is a plus.
- Excellent legal instincts, engineering know-how, and business acumen.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments, juggling educating team members, helping inventors develop ideas, and driving patent strategy.
- Strong technical skills and judgment to identify patentable ideas and technological breakthroughs.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to produce polished, high-quality patent drafts quickly.
- Highly organized with the ability to track and execute on multiple patent portfolio deadlines.
- Self-starter with a proactive approach to engaging with teams and leadership outside of core responsibilities.
- Ability to take ideas that may be only partially formed and draw out the inventive step.

- Ability to collaborate effectively within diverse, cross-functional teams.
