Job Description
The Head of Sensors Engineering at Nuro leads the development, integration, and management of autonomous vehicle perception hardware, including cameras, lidar, and radar, ensuring system performance, safety, and collaboration across cross-functional teams and external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and own the architecture, roadmap, and performance targets for the vehicle's sensor suite (camera, lidar, radar, IMU, etc.)
- Lead the selection, validation, and integration of sensor hardware, drivers, and compute components
- Ensure sensor systems meet automotive and functional safety standards for autonomous vehicle deployment
- Manage supplier relationships, including technical discussions, contract negotiations, and joint development
- Support manufacturing and industrialization processes to ensure high quality and yield of sensor hardware at scale
- Collaborate with software, mechanical, and perception teams to achieve seamless sensor integration and performance
- Manage and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team specializing in hardware, electrical, and software engineering
- Communicate technical roadmaps, trade-offs, and strategic plans to executive leadership and external partners
Requirements
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 15 years of professional engineering experience.
- At least 5 years in a Director-level or equivalent leadership role managing large, diverse teams.
- Deep, hands-on domain expertise and a proven track record of shipping complex products utilizing two or more core AV sensor types e.g., Lidar, Radar, or Camera.
- Demonstrated experience in automotive or consumer electronics product cycles, including qualification, validation, and high-volume manufacturing.
- Expertise in defining and implementing solutions for functional safety e.g., ISO 26262 and reliability in a safety-critical system.
- Experience in managing key supplier relationships, including leading technical discussions, supporting contract negotiations, and joint development programs.
- Ability to support the industrialization and manufacturing process for all sensor hardware, ensuring high quality and yield at scale with the supply base.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely present technical roadmaps and strategic trade-offs to executive leadership.
- Proven ability to recruit, mentor, and scale a world-class, multidisciplinary engineering organization.
- Experience defining, validating, and integrating sensor hardware, drivers, and associated compute components for autonomous vehicles.
- Ability to define and own the end-to-end architecture, roadmap, and performance targets for the entire vehicle sensor suite including camera, lidar, radar, IMU, etc.
- Experience leading the selection, validation, and integration of sensor hardware components.
- Experience supporting the industrialization and manufacturing process for sensor hardware, ensuring high quality and yield at scale.
- Ability to serve as the primary technical voice for the sensor system to executive leadership, investors, and external partners.
