Job Description
A safety leadership role responsible for developing and implementing safety strategies for autonomous vehicle technologies, ensuring public safety, regulatory compliance, and fostering trust through cross-functional collaboration and external engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Safety Office and direct the efforts of the executive Safety Committee to develop safety vision and strategy.
- Prepare, review, and improve company-wide Safety Cases for products, ensuring consistency and quality.
- Implement Safety Management Systems (SMS) across the organization and ensure safety accountability.
- Review and consult on Safety Case components, including verification and validation activities.
- Establish training and safety education requirements for safety responsible engineers and staff.
- Coordinate cross-functional safety activities related to product development, validation, and operation.
- Participate in emergency planning and response activities.
- Stay informed on emerging safety issues, regulatory standards, and industry trends, providing guidance accordingly.
- Represent Nuro in safety dialogues with regulators, industry bodies, and the media.
Requirements
- Deep technical expertise in safety engineering, preferably in a high-tech environment in transportation, with experience in frontier technology and AI ML development.
- Technical experience, preferably with hands-on experience working in software (SW), hardware (HW), and operations.
- Experience in developing and operationalizing safety strategies and Safety Management Systems (SMS).
- Ability to review and improve Safety Case components, including verification and validation (V V), prepared by various organizational functions.
- Experience preparing company-wide Safety Cases for products and ensuring consistency and quality across technical and operational functions.
- Ability to establish training and other requirements to improve safety education among safety responsible engineers and across the company.
- Experience in cross-functional safety organizations and activities governing the development, validation, and operation of autonomous vehicle products.
- Experience in emergency planning and response related to safety in autonomous vehicle operations.
- Ability to stay current on emerging issues in safety and autonomy, including regulatory and industry standards, and provide guidance accordingly.
- Experience representing a company in dialogues with legislators, regulators, industry standard-setting bodies, and the media on safety matters.
- Ability to articulate and communicate safety vision and strategy effectively to internal teams, external stakeholders, regulators, and industry bodies.
- Strong leadership skills to direct efforts of executive Safety Committee and safety teams.
- Ability to prepare and review Safety Cases and ensure a uniform voice and consistency in safety documentation.
- Willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment and share expert advice and counsel.
- Focus on advancing safety through practical solutions aligned with the company's mission.
- Educational background or equivalent experience in safety engineering or related technical fields.
- Ability to work in a manner consistent with safety and regulatory compliance standards.
