Job Description
A safety leadership role responsible for developing and implementing safety strategies for autonomous vehicle technologies, ensuring public safety, regulatory compliance, and fostering trust through cross-functional collaboration and external engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Safety Office and direct the efforts of the executive Safety Committee to develop safety vision and strategy.
- Prepare, review, and improve company-wide Safety Cases for products, ensuring consistency and quality.
- Implement Safety Management Systems (SMS) across the organization and oversee safety strategy execution.
- Review and consult on Safety Case components, including verification and validation activities.
- Establish training and safety education requirements for safety responsible engineers and staff.
- Coordinate cross-functional safety activities related to product development, validation, and operation.
- Participate in emergency planning and response activities.
- Stay informed on emerging safety issues, regulatory standards, and industry trends, providing guidance accordingly.
- Represent Nuro in safety discussions with regulators, industry bodies, and the media.
Requirements
- Deep technical expertise in safety engineering, preferably in a high-tech environment in transportation, with experience in frontier technology and AI ML development.
- Technical experience, preferably with hands-on experience working in software (SW), hardware (HW), and operations.
- Ability to lead and direct the efforts of the company's executive Safety Committee and the Office of Safety within Public Trust.
- Experience in preparing and reviewing Safety Cases for products, including reviewing and improving sections prepared by relevant technical and operational functions.
- Experience in implementing Safety Management Systems (SMS) across an organization.
- Ability to review and consult on Safety Case components, including verification and validation (V V), prepared by various organizational units.
- Experience establishing training and other requirements to improve safety education among safety responsible engineers and across the company.
- Ability to play a key role in cross-functional safety organizations and activities governing development, validation, and operation of products.
- Experience in emergency planning and response.
- Ability to stay current on emerging issues in safety and autonomy, and review and provide guidance on emerging regulatory and industry standards.
- Experience representing a company in national and international dialogue on autonomous vehicle engineering and safety, and articulating safety policies.
- Ability to effectively articulate safety strategy and safety story to regulators, industry bodies, and the general public.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant technical field.
- Proven leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment.
- Strong communication skills to articulate safety vision and strategy to internal and external stakeholders.
