Job Description
The role involves leading safety claims and developing safety cases for autonomous driving systems, focusing on AI components, to ensure the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles. It requires collaboration across teams to identify risks, validate safety measures, and support the deployment of Level 4 autonomous vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and author safety claims in the ADS safety case for onboard and offboard software, including AI components.
- Coordinate system requirements, AI architecture, and safety evidence with cross-functional teams.
- Manage safety claims by understanding ADS design, interfaces, and technical capabilities.
- Generate and decompose safety claims, delegate to teams, and ensure quality of claims.
- Develop counter-arguments to safety claims and ensure they are addressed or mitigated.
- Review and assess evaluation and validation evidence supporting safety claims.
- Track safety performance indicators to monitor L4 deployment safety.
- Escalate technical and safety risks, identify gaps, and propose mitigations to leadership.
- Support safety research and apply relevant technical standards and best practices.
Requirements
- 5 years of technical work experience in a relevant area, of which 3 years should be in robotics software
- Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or Doctoral Degree in Computer Science, Math, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Physics, or related field
- Working knowledge of and ability to apply systems engineering concepts of requirements, verification, and validation, with a deep understanding of how robotic systems work
- Experience working in a safety-critical industry such as robotics, automotive, aviation aerospace, or medical devices for a complex robotic system
- Hands-on experience with ISO 21448 and familiarity with ISO 8800
- Ability to understand and own safety claims in the ADS safety case for onboard and offboard software, including AI components
- Ability to generate atomic safety claims through claim decomposition, delegate to cross-functional teams, and manage quality of delegated work
- Ability to generate counter-arguments or challenges to safety claims and ensure they are addressed or mitigated
- Experience reviewing and assessing evidence from evaluation and validation activities to support safety case claims, working closely with VV test teams
- Experience developing processes for tracking safety performance indicators from various Systems Engineering and Software Evaluation teams to monitor L4 driverless deployment
- Ability to escalate functional and technical risks, identify missing work items such as test gaps, design risks, and AI architecture insufficiencies, and propose mitigations to senior leadership
- Support safety research and identify appropriate technical standards and best practices to support the safety case
- Strong collaboration skills with the ability to think and communicate analytically and effectively, and to build good working relationships
