Job Description

The Lead Electrical Engineer at Nexamp is responsible for reviewing and designing electrical infrastructure for renewable energy projects, providing technical expertise in system interconnection, protection, and compliance, and supporting project development, construction, and operations to advance clean energy initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and specify electrical equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical components.
  • Perform advanced electrical modeling to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, and analyze arc-flash hazards.
  • Manage scope of work for third-party electrical engineers on studies such as protection coordination, power flow, and substation design.
  • Provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle, including development, permitting, construction, and asset management.
  • Review construction drawings for code compliance and assist with code interpretation and RFIs.
  • Review grounding and thermal studies and assist with equipment due diligence.
  • Support grid integration efforts by analyzing utility reports, impact studies, and interconnection agreements.
  • Witness and review testing procedures for medium and high voltage equipment and certify project completion.
  • Lead research and implementation of new products, SOPs, and process improvements.

Requirements

  • 10 years of electrical engineering experience
  • 4 years of PV (photovoltaic) experience
  • PE (Professional Engineer) certification
  • Utility scale design and HV (high voltage) substation experience, preferred
  • Familiarity with ETAP, SKM, or AmpCalc modeling software
  • Experience with industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code, and National Electric Safety Code (NESC)
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium voltage distribution, protection system coordination, and relaying principles
  • Experience in reviewing equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical equipment
  • Ability to specify and review advanced electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, calculate arc-flash hazards, and run step touch grounding analysis
  • Experience managing scope of work for 3rd party electrical engineers including studies such as protection coordination, power flow, arc flash, step touch grounding analysis, PSCAD and PSSE modeling, and substation design
  • Experience providing technical support throughout the entire project lifecycle including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases
  • Ability to review draft construction set drawings for compliance with Nexamp standards and NEC, and assist with code interpretation and RFI responses
  • Experience reviewing grounding studies and thermal ampacity studies
  • Ability to review and analyze utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations
  • Experience witnessing test procedures, reviewing relay test reports, and certifying mechanical completion on construction projects
  • Ability to develop mitigation plans for non-performance to establish safe operation
  • Experience leading new product research, implementation, and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and leading process improvement initiatives
  • Familiarity with RDB files and relay testing reports
  • Valid Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
  • Ability to work as part of a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team with demonstrated leadership capability
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify root causes of problems, and present creative solutions
  • Experience building strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders
  • Eagerness to develop a fundamental understanding of Nexamp’s operations and apply that knowledge to inform business decisions
