Job Description

The Lead Electrical Engineer at Nexamp is responsible for reviewing and designing photovoltaic and energy storage projects, providing technical expertise on electrical infrastructure, modeling, and compliance, and supporting project development, construction, and grid integration efforts within the clean energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and approve PV and ESS project designs, including equipment shop drawings and system modeling.
  • Manage scope of work for third-party electrical engineers and oversee technical studies such as protection coordination, power flow, and grounding analysis.
  • Provide technical support throughout project lifecycle, including development, permitting, construction, and asset management.
  • Ensure compliance of construction drawings with codes and utility requirements, and respond to RFIs during active projects.
  • Support grid integration efforts by analyzing utility reports, interconnection agreements, and developing protective settings.
  • Witness and review testing procedures for medium and high voltage equipment, and certify project completion.
  • Lead research and implementation of new products, standard operating procedures, and process improvements.

Requirements

  • 10 years of electrical engineering experience
  • 4 years of PV (photovoltaic) experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification
  • Utility scale design and High Voltage (HV) substation experience, preferred
  • Experience with electrical infrastructure up to 345kV
  • Experience in protective relaying and controls
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable national codes including NEC (National Electrical Code) and NESC (National Electrical Safety Code)
  • Familiarity with ETAP, SKM, or AmpCalc modeling software
  • Familiarity with AcSELerator and RDB (Relay Database) generation
  • Familiarity with PSSE, Aspen, or PSCAD modeling software
  • Expertise in industry standard design codes such as NEC, IBC (International Building Code), and Fire Code
  • Strong knowledge of electrical principles, including medium voltage distribution, protection system coordination, and relaying principles
  • Experience specifying and reviewing equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers, and other major electrical equipment
  • Ability to perform advanced electrical modeling to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, calculate arc-flash hazards, and run step touch grounding analysis
  • Experience managing scope of work for third-party electrical engineers including studies such as protection coordination, power flow, arc flash, grounding analysis, and substation design
  • Ability to provide technical support throughout the entire project lifecycle including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases
  • Experience reviewing draft construction set drawings for compliance with Nexamp standards and NEC
  • Ability to assist with code interpretation and respond to RFIs
  • Experience reviewing grounding studies and thermal ampacity studies
  • Ability to review equipment due diligence
  • Experience supporting Grid Integration and Design Engineering teams by reviewing utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations
  • Experience witnessing test procedures, reviewing code interpretation, and developing protective settings
  • Ability to implement non-wires alternatives, selective curtailment, and other grid-edge technologies
  • Experience training and mentoring junior engineering personnel
  • Ability to complete project design reviews including review of single line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and site layout designs for code, best practices, and utility compliance
  • Experience responding to RFIs on active construction projects
  • Experience certifying mechanical completion on construction projects
  • Ability to develop mitigation plans for non-performance to establish safe operation
  • Experience reviewing RDB files and relay test reports
  • Strong knowledge of construction means and methods
  • Ability to lead new product research, implementation, and development of SOPs and process improvements
  • Demonstrated leadership capability in managing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication skills for effectively conveying technical information
  • Ability to analyze data, identify root causes of problems, and present creative solutions
  • Experience building strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders
  • Valid Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and passion for solving climate issues
