Job Description

The Lead Commissioning Engineer will oversee the commissioning and performance validation of utility-scale renewable energy projects, including solar and storage systems, ensuring they meet technical, safety, and operational standards while supporting project milestones and optimizing system performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead commissioning of PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems from pre-energization to operational turnover
  • Troubleshoot electrical, protection, and SCADA communication issues during commissioning and early operations
  • Manage project commissioning schedules in collaboration with internal teams and external contractors
  • Provide remote and field support for DAS, inverter, BESS, and SCADA commissioning and testing
  • Review and validate site performance, including conducting performance testing and troubleshooting underperformance
  • Design and oversee Data Acquisition System (DAS) and SCADA systems for renewable projects
  • Interpret telemetry and controls requirements from market, utility, and ISO sources and coordinate infrastructure procurement
  • Develop SCADA engineering standards for utility-scale applications
  • Mentor and train junior team members and technicians in commissioning processes
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of networking equipment, processes, and quality assurance

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent education certification background.
  • At least 7 years of experience designing and commissioning electrical power systems, or network design.
  • At least 4 years of experience in renewables such as Solar, Wind, and Storage.
  • Experience in controls engineering for utility-scale renewable hybrid energy, PV BESS, AC-coupled, and DC-coupled systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of inverter parameter setting procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience with technical communications protocols Modbus TCP, DNP3.0, etc.
  • Experience with controls software hardware platforms and communication standards such as MESA, Sunspec, etc.
  • Working knowledge and hands-on experience with various relays, meters, SCADA Gateways, and Data Concentrators, with experience in programming RTACs preferred.
  • Expertise in commissioning and resolving site technical issues, with proven success in independently troubleshooting challenging SCADA related technical issues.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software.
  • Knowledge of industry standard design codes and electrical engineering and relaying principles.
  • Ability to independently lead the commissioning of PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) from pre-energization through project operational turnover.
  • Ability to act as a primary troubleshooting resource for the Commissioning Engineering and Field Commissioning teams, providing expert support on electrical, protection, and SCADA communications issues during commissioning and early operations.
  • Ability to manage project commissioning schedules in partnership with Deployment, SCADA, Engineering, and external contractors, ensuring alignment with construction and interconnection milestones.
  • Ability to review and validate site performance of assets once live, including managing or executing performance testing and troubleshooting underperformance.
  • Experience in leading Data Acquisition System (DAS) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system design for PV, BESS, and hybrid PV BESS projects, interpreting telemetry and controls requirements, and coordinating procurement and installation of telecom, hardware, and software infrastructure.
  • Experience in developing SCADA engineering standards for utility-scale applications.
  • Mentoring and training junior commissioning team members and field technicians.
  • Experience in supporting continuous improvement of networking equipment, products, and quality assurance processes, including conducting research and contributing to best-practices documentation.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively communicating information, ideas, and perspectives with people inside and beyond the organization.
  • Experience in making improvements to current work, processes, products, and services across the organization.
  • Ability to ask appropriate questions, analyze data, identify root causes of problems, and present creative solutions.
  • Ability to build strong internal and external relationships with customers and stakeholders, instilling trust and loyalty.
  • Eagerness to develop a fundamental understanding of how Nexamp operates and apply that knowledge to inform business decisions.
