Job Description
The Principal Utility Electrical Engineer at New Leaf Energy leads the technical strategy and design of utility-scale renewable energy projects, collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure system reliability, regulatory compliance, and innovative grid solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering design strategy for utility-scale projects
- Evaluate utility deliverables and provide guidance throughout project development
- Collaborate with internal teams and external industry professionals on technical and strategic initiatives
- Conduct system analysis to identify optimal project locations and ensure design reliability
- Interpret and negotiate technical positions with utilities, ISOs, and regulatory bodies
- Oversee interconnection study workstreams and validate modeling assumptions
- Lead research and development on grid-forming inverters, black-start capability, and hybrid dispatch optimization
- Create and maintain technical standards, tools, and best-practice guides for utility-scale projects
- Manage third-party engineering firms to meet project deadlines and quality standards
- Provide technical support for plant design, including equipment needs and clearance requirements
Requirements
- 10 years of power engineering experience, with significant experience in development business
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering required
- Masters or PE license preferred
- Strong ability to perform power system calculations using software programs
- Expert ability in softwares and tools used by the engineering team as well as the capability to instruct others in how to perform analysis calculations
- Experience in substation engineering or ISO RTO background preferred
- Ability to interpret and negotiate technical positions with utilities, ISOs, and FERC
- Experience leading internal strategic initiatives with minimal direction, including goal-setting, conception, planning, and execution
- Ability to autonomously manage third-party engineering firms to deliver on deadlines, including scoping, reviewing, and holding them accountable to NLE deadlines
- Experience creating and maintaining technical standards and tools for utility scale projects
- Ability to support project finance during project sale negotiations and post-closing deliverables
- Strong project management and operational skills
- Exhibits advanced understanding of power system and design engineering principles, including inverter design, system grounding, BESS design, and protection
- Knowledge of interconnection policy and regulatory environment for utility scale projects
- Ability to lead cross-collaborative standard initiatives using the NLE process implementation map
- Ability to develop and deliver structured training to team members engaged in utility scale work
- Ability to interpret and negotiate technical positions with utilities, ISOs, and FERC
- Ability to oversee interconnection study workstreams and validate PSSE PSCAD models and assumptions
- Strong understanding of utility scale business goals and system analysis to identify optimal project locations
