Job Description

The position involves leading state-level campaigns in Michigan to promote policies that support workers, communities, and environmental justice within the industrial sector, with a focus on building power, forming strategic alliances, and driving systemic change for a sustainable and equitable industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shape and drive state-level campaigns related to industry transformation, climate, justice, and jobs in Michigan.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, allies, policymakers, and community groups.
  • Develop and implement integrated campaign strategies based on policy and power analysis.
  • Support existing efforts that promote jobs, justice, and climate goals within the industrial sector.
  • Lead fundraising initiatives to grow the state program and team.
  • Represent Industrious Labs in coalition spaces, media, and conversations with public officials and funders.
  • Develop policy expertise in sectors such as steel, cement, industrial heat, climate, labor, and air quality.

Requirements

  • 10 to 15 years of experience with increasing responsibility leading teams and driving shared goals.
  • Background in policy development, organizing, or leadership within advocacy or movement spaces.
  • Experience designing policy campaigns and using tools like power mapping, strategy charts, or narrative development.
  • Strong familiarity with how state and local agencies and venues function.
  • A relationship-builder with ties to grassroots groups, labor, environmental justice communities, policymakers, and other key players in Michigan.
  • Proven track record of delivering policy wins and moving ideas from strategy through implementation.
  • Strong project management skills and the skills to juggle priorities.
  • Experience managing staff and developing teams.
  • Deep knowledge of Michigan’s industrial landscape, including operating large steel mills, cement plants, paper mills, and related industries.
  • Ability to build diverse coalitions and work across party lines with stakeholders with very different interests.
  • Strong persuasion skills to build coalitions and maintain clarity about progress toward long-term goals.
  • Ability to partner with campaign leads to identify high-impact policy and campaign opportunities.
  • Experience supporting existing state efforts that advance jobs, justice, and climate goals in the industrial sector.
  • Ability to develop policy expertise in sectors like steel, cement, industrial heat, climate, labor, and air quality policy.
  • Strong communication skills able to break down complex issues into clear strategies and decisions.
  • Ability to build relationships with key allies and develop strategic alliances with stakeholders across the spectrum.
  • Willingness to lead fundraising efforts to grow the state program and team.
  • Based in Michigan or willing to relocate to Michigan, with deep knowledge of the local landscape and strong existing relationships.
  • Alignment with Industrious Labs’ mission, values, and goals.
  • Strong collaboration skills and a service-oriented work style.

  • Demonstrated experience working across lines of race, class, gender, and geography.
