Job Description
The Customs Clearance Trade Compliance Specialist supports international trade operations by managing customs documentation, ensuring compliance with regulations, and coordinating import/export activities within the company's supply chain and Foreign Trade Zone operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate customs entry filings with external customs brokers and review import documentation for accuracy.
- Classify products using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and validate tariff classifications, country of origin, and customs valuation.
- Support FTZ operations by ensuring import documentation aligns with FTZ inventory records and assisting with zone admissions, withdrawals, and transfers.
- Prepare, review, and maintain organized import/export documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and customs declarations.
- Partner with internal teams to ensure trade compliance and provide guidance on customs documentation requirements.
- Identify and implement process improvements for customs documentation workflows and compliance procedures.
Requirements
- Coordinate customs entry filings with external customs brokers and review and validate import documentation prior to submission to CBP, ensuring accuracy of commercial invoices, packing lists, and entry documentation.
- Classify products using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), validate tariff classification, country of origin declarations, and customs valuation, and maintain customs documentation and entry records in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Monitor regulatory updates impacting imports, exports, and customs compliance.
- Support FTZ operations by ensuring import documentation supports accurate FTZ admissions, coordinate with FTZ specialists to ensure customs entries align with FTZ inventory records, and assist in validating documentation required for FTZ admissions, withdrawals, and zone transfers.
- Prepare and review import and export documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, bills of lading, airway bills, import declarations, and supporting customs documentation, and maintain organized customs entry records to support internal reviews, CBP audits, and regulatory compliance.
- Partner with internal teams including supply chain, procurement, finance, and operations to ensure trade compliance requirements are met, and provide guidance to internal stakeholders on customs documentation requirements and regulatory procedures.
- Support internal audits and government compliance reviews when required.
- Identify opportunities to improve customs documentation workflows and clearance efficiency, assist in developing and implementing internal trade compliance procedures, and support ERP or compliance system updates related to international trade transactions.
- Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, International Business, Logistics, or a related field.
- Have 3 to 7 years of experience in customs compliance, import-export operations, or international trade compliance, including experience working with customs brokers and supporting customs entry documentation.
- Have experience supporting manufacturing environments, high-volume imports, or Foreign Trade Zone operations (strongly preferred).
- Possess knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations and import documentation requirements, familiarity with the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification, and experience with ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle, or customs documentation platforms.
- Be proficient in Microsoft Excel and documentation management systems.
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail and regulatory compliance, excellent communication and coordination skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Possess an analytical mindset with strong documentation and reporting capabilities.
- Preferred but not required: Hold a Licensed Customs Broker (LCB), Certified Customs Specialist (CCS), or Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) certification.
