Job Description
The Senior or Staff Mechanical Engineer will lead the mechanical design, analysis, and integration of hardware components for autonomous vehicles, focusing on sensor support structures, vehicle assemblies, and manufacturing processes to support low to high volume production.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical design analysis from ideation to drawing release.
- Own and perform analysis of subsystems or complex component assemblies on and off vehicles.
- Conduct finite element analyses to validate designs against use cases.
- Collaborate on design for manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability during the design cycle.
- Create detailed calculations for components such as joints and seals.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analysis and apply GD&T strategies.
- Develop cooling solutions for sensors and electronic components.
- Manage the bill of materials (BOM) and coordinate with procurement and manufacturing.
- Build and bring-up prototype vehicles following engineering standards.
- Mentor and develop the mechanical engineering team by establishing standards and processes.
Requirements
- 5 years of experience designing analyzing complex mechanical structures and integration of hardware.
- An engineering degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics or an equivalent field.
- Delivered multiple parts, subsystem s or system s to production successfully.
- Experience in automotive or transportation sector, dealing with larger assemblies and parts.
- Excellent skills for 3D CAD design and 2D drafting per ASME Y14.5, with SolidWorks preferred.
- Experience in FE analysis, including vibration analysis (bonus).
- Experience working in an engineering process environment, including using PDM/PLM, creating ECOs, generating BOMs, and configuration management.
- Expertise in creating aluminum, steel designs, with a focus on sheet metal fabrication, welded design, extrusions, and machined design.
- Expertise in tolerance stacking, especially linear simple 2D stacks.
- Working knowledge of ISO 26262 and its relevance to the integration of electrical and electronic components.
- Expertise in component selection and specification of seals, fasteners, materials, coatings, etc.
- Hands-on engineer able and willing to use hand tools including drills, brake presses, oscillating saws, grinders, rotary tools, etc.
- Experience in designing heat sinks, heat exchangers, thermal design, or CFD (bonus).
- Experience working with sensors such as Lidars, Radars, Cameras, GNSS, etc.
- Experience working with sensor cleaning and sensor protection solutions.
- Working knowledge of scripting languages like Python, Go, Perl, etc.
- Working knowledge of optics and experience working with cameras, lidars.
- Working knowledge of harness routing and experience working with harness engineers.
- Understanding of electrical/electronic basics such as power draw, high data rate cables, connectors, etc.
