Job Description

An experienced Manual VTL Machinist Technician responsible for machining turbine engine components to precise specifications, performing setups, inspections, and finishing operations in a modern aerospace manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow work instructions and use gauges and tools to inspect parts and determine material removal requirements.
  • Operate machines to achieve specified dimensions on turbine engine components.
  • Use inspection gauges and hand tools to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Identify and correct machining issues related to tools, holders, collets, and chucks.
  • Record inspection findings and machining data accurately.
  • Perform finishing operations such as deburring, tapping, honing, and bench work.
  • Participate in training and provide expertise in on-the-job training for machinist technicians.

Requirements

  • Five plus years of experience in the operation of Manual Turret Lathe VTL equipment in a job shop type environment, including first article experience.
  • Creative problem-solving skills related to machine setups, VTL and lathe tooling, and securing and fixturing of workpieces.
  • Firm understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), critical dimensioning, the relationship between dimensions, and technical drawing reading and interpretation.
  • The ability to indicate fixtures and parts to achieve required runouts, including understanding timing or rotational values, creating machining starting points based on existing features, and creating a flat plane for the start of machining.
  • Rework experience in machining processes.
  • Technical high school diploma, machinist trade school, or equivalent work experience.
  • Set-up experience with tooling and fixtures with the ability to follow instructions per technical drawings or work instructions.
  • Familiarity with shop math principles and basic trigonometry.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand-held power tools, files, and skills in assembly and disassembly.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand English, and communicate effectively with other employees.
  • Pre-employment testing requirements that may include fitness for duty testing and a vision exam.
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for portions of the shift, move parts weighing up to 50 pounds using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods, and move lighter parts with or without assistive devices.
  • Occasional use of powered and hand-held tools.
