Job Description
The Machinist Intern Pre-Apprenticeship program offers high school students enrolled in machining technical programs hands-on training and experience in setting up and operating machining equipment, learning industry standards, safety, and quality control to prepare for a career in aerospace machining.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete the pre-apprenticeship program and coursework on setting up and repairing aerospace components using Manual CNC machining equipment
- Learn industry standards, safety policies, materials, repair processes, and documentation procedures
- Safely set up and operate machine tools
- Align and secure fixtures, cutting tools, and components onto machine tables
- Read and interpret technical drawings and work instructions
- Inspect machined components to ensure quality specifications using precision gaging
- Accurately complete all required documentation
Requirements
- Enrolled in an approved technical high school or trade school in the field of machining or related.
- Proficient in basic math, including adding and subtracting fractions and decimals.
- Ability to learn to understand technical documents, drawings, and interpreting work instructions.
- Maintain regular attendance and perform duties in a timely manner while displaying a positive work ethic.
- Read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
- Ability to learn the use of measuring tools, such as calipers and micrometers.
- Work in varying positions from time to time, including standing and sitting for portions of the shift.
- Move parts weighing up to 50 pounds using hoists, slings, carts, or other handling methods.
- Follow all safety and environmental rules that apply, including the use of safety and personal protective equipment when required.
- Complete the internship pre-apprenticeship program and coursework focused on setting up and repairing aerospace components on Manual CNC machining equipment.
- Learn industry standards and regulations, materials machined, repair processes, safety policies, formula calculations, proper documentation, and appropriate communication with team members, supervisors, and trainers.
- Demonstrate how to safely and efficiently set up and operate machine tools.
- Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and components onto the machine tables.
- Work from and read technical drawings and work instructions.
- Perform inspection of machined components by selecting and setting up precision gaging to ensure external and internal quality specifications and requirements.
- Complete all necessary documentation timely and accurately.
- Pre-employment testing requirements that may include fitness for duty testing and a vision exam.
- Use powered and hand-held tools frequently.
