Job Description

The Industrial Lab Technician performs chemical and metallurgical testing to support aerospace maintenance and repair processes, working with various materials and equipment in a climate-controlled environment, while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform chemical and metallurgical laboratory tests to validate and control shop processes.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory test equipment, including preventative maintenance and adjustments.
  • Conduct wet chemistry testing of process solutions, including sample collection, titrations, and record keeping.
  • Perform metallurgical preparation, microscopic evaluation, and mechanical testing of metallic specimens and coatings.
  • Prepare, label, and manage chemical reagents, solutions, and waste in compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Manage chemical inventory using online database systems.
  • Handle and move chemical containers and pallets safely using appropriate equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory equipment and glassware.
  • Machine test coupons using manual lathe machines for repair process evaluations.
  • Assist in engineering tasks related to repair processes and provide team communication and support.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or higher in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or any other scientific field of study or two years equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and previous experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Some prior experience with testing chemicals via laboratory techniques preferred.
  • Ability or experience following directions and reading work instructions with associated experience in problem solving and decision making.
  • Familiarity with governmental regulations relating to chemical storage and safety.
  • Demonstrated previous experience in the use and application of basic math skills, such as decimals and percentages, in a work environment.
  • Careful attention to detail and capability of handling multiple tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and standard software programs.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Regularly work with chemicals, metals, and associated testing equipment in a laboratory setting.
  • Use of safety and personal protective equipment under some conditions, including PPE such as safety glasses, face shields, Tychem suits, respirators, ear plugs, and lab jackets as required.
  • Pre-employment testing requirements that may include a vision test.
  • Ability to frequently move chemical containers up to 50 lbs and pallets containing 55-gallon drums using equipment such as pallet jacks, forklifts, cranes, hoists, carts, or other handling methods.
  • Perform chemical analysis including collection of samples, performing titrations, maintaining lab records, and performing math calculations.
  • Maintain chemical tanks, including cleaning, preparing new solutions, and performing chemical additions.
  • Perform metallurgical prep, microscopic evaluation, and mechanical testing of thermal spray coatings and metallic structures.
  • Prepare and label chemical etchants and reagents for various departments.
  • Responsible for storage and proper labeling of chemical waste containers following RCRA regulatory standards.
  • Manage and maintain chemical inventory via online database system.
  • Perform daily maintenance and general housekeeping of lab equipment and glassware.
  • Machine reusable test coupons using a manual lathe machine.
  • Perform engineering tasks associated with repair processes as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively with all employees as a member of the organizational team.
  • Assist in the training of personnel as needed.
