Job Description
The Sustainable Biomass Scientist will evaluate and advise on the sustainability, supply chains, and regulatory aspects of biomass feedstocks used in climate solutions, supporting Carbon Direct's mission to enable decarbonization and carbon removal through sustainable practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate the sustainability of biomass feedstocks, including resource management, emissions, land use, biodiversity, and social impacts
- Analyze biomass supply chains to identify opportunities for optimization, risk reduction, and emissions reduction
- Provide technical expertise on biomass supply chains, resource management, and economics to internal teams
- Ensure compliance with regulations and standards governing biomass utilization
- Collaborate with external stakeholders to promote sustainable biomass practices
- Conduct research on innovations in sustainable biomass utilization to inform strategies
- Engage with clients to understand their sustainability goals and recommend biomass-based solutions
Requirements
- Experience in biomass sustainability, biomass resource management, economics, procurement, carbon removal, or a related field.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, forestry, agriculture, or a related field; an advanced degree is preferred.
- Strong understanding of biomass feedstocks and supply chains, with a focus on management and economics.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and standards governing biomass utilization and resource management, such as sustainability certifications and carbon accounting protocols.
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to conduct rigorous assessments and evaluations of complex systems, such as through life cycle assessment.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences and build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders across disciplines.
- Ability to assess the sustainability of biomass feedstocks considering resource management, economics, life cycle emissions, land use, biodiversity impacts, and social implications.
- Ability to conduct comprehensive analyses of biomass supply chains to identify opportunities for optimization, risk reduction, efficiency improvements, and emissions reductions.
- Ability to provide technical expertise and guidance on biomass supply chains, resource management, and economics to interdisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations and standards governing biomass utilization to ensure compliance with environmental laws and guidelines.
- Ability to collaborate with external stakeholders, including biomass suppliers, industry associations, research institutions, and policymakers, to promote sustainable biomass practices.
- Ability to stay current with developments and innovations in sustainable biomass utilization through research and analysis.
- Experience engaging with clients to understand their sustainability goals and carbon reduction needs, and to offer tailored solutions involving biomass-based solutions.

Salary Range: 133,000-163,000 USD per year
