Job Description

The Ubuntu Security Engineer role involves monitoring, analyzing, and fixing vulnerabilities in open source software within the Ubuntu ecosystem, collaborating with global teams and the open source community to enhance security and respond to emerging threats.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in open source packages
  • Track vulnerabilities in the Ubuntu ecosystem from discovery to remediation
  • Collaborate with internal teams and upstream developers to develop and exchange vulnerability patches
  • Audit source code for security vulnerabilities
  • Build features and tools to enhance the security of Ubuntu and its components

Requirements

  • A thorough understanding of the common categories of security vulnerabilities and techniques for fixing them
  • Familiarity with coordinated disclosure practices
  • Familiarity with open source development tools and methodologies
  • Skill in one or more of the following programming languages: C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, or JavaScript TypeScript
  • Excellent logic, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with the team and Ubuntu community members
  • Experience with Linux Debian or Ubuntu preferred
  • Willingness to travel internationally at least twice a year for one week each time
  • Ability to be productive in a globally distributed team through self-discipline and self-motivation
  • Result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments
