Job Description

A Technical Author at Canonical is responsible for creating, maintaining, and improving technical documentation across various teams and products, collaborating with colleagues and engaging with user communities to ensure high-quality, user-focused content that supports product success and organizational communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, maintain, and improve software and internal documentation
  • Collaborate with team members to produce effective documentation contributions
  • Influence product development and design through expert documentation and user feedback
  • Engage with user communities to ensure documentation meets their needs
  • Standardize content structure, presentation, style, and language across products
  • Advance documentation best practices and contribute to the documentation discipline

Requirements

  • Demonstrable documentation skills, insight and enthusiasm for creating high-quality technical documentation.
  • Experience of software development contexts, with familiarity in Linux, working on the command line, Git, and documentation markup languages such as reStructuredText and MyST.
  • Hold a BSc BA degree or equivalent.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and other colleagues across the organization.
  • Excellent written communication skills with a focus on functional clarity and quality.
  • Technical curiosity and fascination with software technology and its challenges.
  • Experience engaging with user communities to ensure documentation meets their needs and encouraging community contributions.
  • Ability to influence product development and provide expert opinions on function and design.
  • Willingness and ability to work fully remotely from anywhere in the world.
  • Ability to create, maintain, and improve software and other documentation.
  • Ability to standardize the structure, presentation, style, and language of content across multiple products.
  • Willingness to engage in collaboration with documentation peers to advance documentation best practices and standards.
  • Ability to contribute to and challenge the understanding and practice of documentation as a discipline.
  • Willingness to travel twice a year for up to two weeks for events (if applicable).
