Job Description
A Technical Author at Canonical is responsible for creating, maintaining, and improving technical documentation across various teams and products, collaborating with colleagues and engaging with user communities to enhance the user experience and support the company's open-source initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, maintain, and improve software and internal documentation
- Collaborate with team members to produce effective documentation contributions
- Influence product development through expert feedback on function and design
- Engage with user communities to ensure documentation meets their needs
- Standardize content structure, presentation, style, and language across products
- Advance documentation practices and best-practices within the organization
Requirements
- Demonstrable documentation skills, insight, and enthusiasm for creating, maintaining, and improving software and other documentation.
- Experience of software development contexts.
- Familiarity with Linux, working on the command line, Git, and documentation markup languages such as reStructuredText and MyST.
- Hold a BSc, BA degree or equivalent.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with team members and community members.
- Sympathetic to the needs and challenges of open-source software and its communities.
- Demonstrates technical curiosity and fascination with software technology and its challenges.
- Able to influence the development of products and services as an expert user with important opinions about function and design.
- Able to create, maintain, and improve documentation that meets user needs.
- Able to engage with user communities to ensure documentation quality and relevance.
- Able to standardize the structure, presentation, style, and language of content across products.
- Willing and able to travel twice a year for up to two weeks for events.
