Job Description
A System Software Engineer role focused on developing and optimizing the Python runtime, tooling, and ecosystem within Ubuntu, aiming to enhance the developer experience and integrate modern programming language innovations into the open-source Linux platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a distributed team to develop and improve Python runtime, tooling, and ecosystem on Ubuntu
- Select, integrate, and package tools to enhance developer and operator experience with Python on Ubuntu
- Write high-quality code to implement new features and debug issues
- Review code and participate in design discussions to ensure architecture improvements
- Mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to code and design reviews
- Work with other teams to optimize Ubuntu's performance, security, and reliability for Python-related functionalities
Requirements
- Relevant Python experience, ideally in the world of cloud-native software and Linux
- Experience or interest in learning how to package software for Debian and Ubuntu
- Long-time Linux user
- Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
- Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about an alternative chosen path
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events, with trips up to two weeks long
- Work from home with the ability to travel 2 to 4 weeks a year for internal and external events
- Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
- Select, integrate and package best-of-breed tooling with Ubuntu to improve developer and operator experience with Python
- Write high-quality code to create new features
- Debug issues and produce high-quality code to fix them
- Review code produced by other engineers
- Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
- Work from home with global travel 2 to 4 weeks a year for internal and external events
