Job Description
A System Software Engineer role focused on developing and optimizing GCC and LLVM compiler toolchains within the Ubuntu operating system, contributing to open source projects, and enhancing the developer experience across desktop, cloud, and IoT platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a distributed team to develop and improve compiler toolchains for Ubuntu
- Select, integrate, and package tooling to enhance developer and operator experience with GCC and LLVM
- Write, debug, and review high-quality code to implement new features and fix issues
- Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and architecture decisions to optimize Ubuntu's performance and experience
- Mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to team knowledge sharing
- Work with other teams to ensure architecture decisions support Ubuntu's reliability, security, and future-proofing
Requirements
- Relevant experience with GCC or LLVM, ideally in the world of cloud-native software and Linux
- Experience in packaging software for Debian and Ubuntu
- Experience working with Linux distributions
- Excellent competencies in modern C and C++ programming languages
- Strong understanding of software architectures and open source software
- Ability to write high-quality code to create new features and debug issues
- Experience participating in code reviews and design reviews
- Ability to collaborate proactively with a distributed team
- Experience selecting, integrating, and packaging tooling with Ubuntu to improve developer and operator experience
- Ability to discuss design ideas and collaborate on solutions with team members
- Experience working remotely and ability to work from home effectively
- Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events, with trips lasting up to two weeks
- Exceptional academic track record from high school and university
- Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about an alternative chosen path
- Long-term Linux user
