Job Description

Canonical is seeking engineering managers to lead and develop engineering teams focused on optimizing Ubuntu for various hardware platforms, ensuring high-quality software delivery, and collaborating with open source communities and industry partners in a remote, global environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of engineers across various experience levels
  • Oversee project delivery and support timely achievement of milestones
  • Serve as technical lead on complex customer engagements involving system architectures
  • Implement disciplined engineering processes and optimize platform software stacks
  • Integrate and maintain Ubuntu on latest hardware platforms
  • Contribute to code reviews and technical documentation
  • Collaborate with leadership and other teams on strategy and execution
  • Drive healthy engineering practices, quality, and performance improvements

Requirements

  • An Engineering Manager should be an outstanding developer themselves, capable of reviewing patches or software design specs.
  • Experience in leading software engineering teams.
  • Fluency in C, C++, and Python programming languages.
  • Experience with Linux and operational systems software such as kernel or user space.
  • Experience with Debian, Ubuntu, or other Linux distribution packaging.
  • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM fields, or a compelling narrative about an alternative educational or career path.
  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  • Experience overseeing commercial engagements and supporting timely delivery on project milestones.
  • Ability to implement disciplined engineering processes.
  • Ability to develop engineering talent, provide technical representation of the team and product, and drive collaboration with other teams and customers.
  • Experience contributing to code reviews and technical documentation.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions and influence technical culture internally and externally.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events, each up to two weeks long.
  • Professional written and spoken English language skills.
  • Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation.
  • Result-oriented mindset with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Thoughtfulness and self-motivation.
  • Physical and mental capacity to work remotely in a globally distributed environment.
