A Software Maintenance Engineer at Canonical works on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues across the Linux-based Ubuntu stack, including kernel, virtualization, storage, networking, and open source applications, supporting enterprise customers and contributing to open source communities.
Key Responsibilities
Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
Participate in upstream communities to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and seek upstream inclusion
Review code produced by other engineers
Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
Work on upstream bug fixes and upstream software development
Prioritize work and manage time effectively against work priorities
Contribute to team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
Requirements
Experience with Linux and open source software
Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar
An exceptional academic track record
Willingness to work remotely and travel internationally up to 10% of work time
Ability to resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
Ability to maintain a close working relationship with Canonical s Field, Support and product engineering teams
Ability to participate in upstream communities
Experience developing bug fixes, backport patches, and working with upstream for inclusion

Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
Ability to prioritize work and manage time effectively against those priorities
Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications
Work productively at any level of the stack including kernel, virtualization, containerization, storage, networking, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and open source applications
Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive difficult issues
