Job Description

A Software Maintenance Engineer role focused on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based infrastructure and open source software such as Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, supporting enterprise customers and contributing to the open source community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
  • Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
  • Participate in upstream open source communities
  • Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream projects for inclusion
  • Review code produced by other engineers
  • Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
  • Prioritize and manage work effectively based on project needs
  • Contribute to improving processes, tools, and documentation through team discussions

Requirements

  • Experience with Linux and open source software
  • Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
  • Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar academic field with an exceptional academic track record
  • Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive difficult issues
  • Ability to work productively at any level of the open source stack, including kernel and user space
  • Ability to resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
  • Experience with developing bug fixes, backport patches, and working with upstream communities for inclusion
  • Ability to review code produced by other engineers
  • Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills
  • Clear, technical, and concise communication skills
  • Willingness to work remotely and travel internationally up to 10% of the work time for team meetings, events, and conferences
  • Ability to develop upstream bug fixes and upstream issues to resolution
  • Participate in upstream communities related to open source software
  • Prior experience or willingness to participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
