Job Description
A Software Maintenance Engineer role focused on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues in Linux-based infrastructure and open source software such as Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, supporting enterprise customers and contributing to the open source community.
Key Responsibilities
- Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
- Participate in upstream open source communities
- Develop bug fixes, backport patches, and collaborate with upstream projects for inclusion
- Review code produced by other engineers
- Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and bug fixes
- Prioritize and manage work effectively based on project needs
- Contribute to improving processes, tools, and documentation through team discussions
Requirements
- Experience with Linux and open source software
- Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
- Background in Computer Science, STEM or similar academic field with an exceptional academic track record
- Willingness to learn unfamiliar technology and deep-dive difficult issues
- Ability to work productively at any level of the open source stack, including kernel and user space
- Ability to resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Experience with developing bug fixes, backport patches, and working with upstream communities for inclusion
- Ability to review code produced by other engineers
- Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
- Effective time management and prioritization skills
- Clear, technical, and concise communication skills
- Willingness to work remotely and travel internationally up to 10% of the work time for team meetings, events, and conferences
- Ability to develop upstream bug fixes and upstream issues to resolution
- Participate in upstream communities related to open source software
- Prior experience or willingness to participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
