Job Description
A Software Maintenance Engineer role focused on troubleshooting, fixing, and upstreaming issues across the Linux-based infrastructure and open source applications used in Ubuntu, involving work on various layers of the software stack and collaborating with upstream communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Maintain a close working relationship with Canonical's Field, Support, and product engineering teams
- Participate in upstream communities to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and seek inclusion
- Review code produced by other engineers
- Troubleshoot and drive issues to resolution with workarounds, guidance, and upstream bug fixes
- Develop and implement bug fixes and patches for open source software
- Prioritize and manage work effectively against project priorities
- Contribute to team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
Requirements
- Experience with Linux and open source software
- Experience with at least one of Python, Go, C or C++ on Linux
- An exceptional academic track record in Computer Science, STEM or similar
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
- Ability to resolve complex customer problems related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes
- Ability to maintain a close working relationship with Canonical s Field, Support and product engineering teams
- Ability to participate in upstream communities
- Ability to develop bug fixes, backport patches, and work with upstream for inclusion
- Ability to review code produced by other engineers
- Demonstrate good judgment in technical methods and techniques
- Prioritize work and manage time effectively against those priorities
- Participate in team discussions to improve processes, tools, and documentation
- Maintain clear, technical, and concise communications
- Work productively at any level of the stack including the kernel
- Work from home and travel internationally up to 10% of work time for team meetings, events, and conferences
