Job Description

An Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering at Canonical leads and supports a distributed team responsible for maintaining and improving open source software across various platforms, ensuring timely bug fixes, technical excellence, and fostering a collaborative engineering culture in a remote, globally distributed environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers, providing coaching, mentorship, and career development support
  • Ensure timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various open source software stacks
  • Set and manage expectations with internal teams, senior management, and external stakeholders
  • Support technical leadership by influencing culture, facilitating delivery, and contributing to strategy and execution
  • Maintain high standards of software quality through testing methodologies and maintainable code practices
  • Collaborate with other teams within the organization to support business and technical objectives

Requirements

  • Technical leadership and a solid background in software development are a must, so that you are able to help your team members grow professionally.
  • Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience with version control systems such as git.
  • Experience with debugging tools such as gdb, crash, or other debugging tools.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality.
  • Experience with Linux, with a preference towards Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
  • People management experience in a support organisation is a strong plus.
  • Ability to manage and lead a distributed team of engineers, including hiring, coaching, mentoring, providing feedback, and career development guidance.
  • Ability to support timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and other technical solutions in various technology fields including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, MAAS.
  • Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with organizing and prioritizing complex problem resolution and bug fixes.
