Job Description
An Engineering Manager in Sustaining Engineering at Canonical leads and supports a distributed team of engineers focused on improving open source software across various platforms, ensuring timely delivery of fixes and solutions, and fostering a collaborative and innovative engineering culture in a remote, globally distributed environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers, providing coaching, mentoring, and career development support.
- Ensure timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various open source software stacks.
- Facilitate technical delivery, influence team strategy, and promote modern software development practices.
- Collaborate with other teams, stakeholders, and external partners to support business and technical objectives.
- Maintain high standards of code quality, testing methodologies, and maintainability in software development.
- Set and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for team performance and growth.
- Support customer interactions by demonstrating technical expertise and representing Canonical positively.
Requirements
- Technical leadership and a solid background in software development are a must, so that you are able to help your team members grow professionally.
- Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar programming languages.
- Experience with version control systems such as git.
- Experience with debugging tools such as gdb, crash, or other debugging tools.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality.
- Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written.
- Experience with Linux, with a preference towards Ubuntu.
- Experience with Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
- People management experience in a support organization is a strong plus.
- Manage and lead a distributed team of engineers, including hiring, coaching, mentoring, providing feedback, and career development guidance.
- Support timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and other technical solutions to address business needs in a variety of technology fields including Ubuntu, OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, Juju, MAAS.
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders.
- Advocate and advance modern software development practices.
- Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with the company values.
- Work from home with the possibility of global travel up to 10% for internal and external events.
