Job Description
An Engineering Manager for Sustaining Engineering at Canonical leads and supports a distributed team responsible for maintaining and improving open source software across various platforms, ensuring timely bug fixes, technical solutions, and fostering a collaborative engineering culture in a remote, globally distributed environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a distributed team of engineers, providing coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback
- Ensure timely delivery of bug fixes, patches, and technical solutions across various open source software stacks
- Support the professional growth of team members and foster a collaborative engineering culture
- Collaborate with other teams, stakeholders, and management to align on strategy and execution
- Demonstrate technical leadership through expertise in software development, debugging, and testing methodologies
- Set and manage expectations with internal teams and external stakeholders
- Advocate for modern software development practices and maintain high standards of code quality
Requirements
- Technical leadership and a solid background in software development are a must, so that you are able to help your team members grow professionally.
- Professional software delivery experience using C, C++, Go, Python, or similar programming languages.
- Experience with version control systems such as git.
- Experience with debugging tools such as gdb, crash, or other debugging tools.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to testing methodologies and maintainable code quality.
- Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written.
- Experience with Linux, with a preference towards Ubuntu.
- Experience with Open Source and Open Source Business Models.
- People management experience in a support organization is a strong plus.
