Job Description

Canonical is seeking an engineering manager to lead and develop a remote team of engineers working on open source cloud infrastructure, focusing on microservice architectures, Linux kernel, virtualization, storage, and networking technologies. The role involves technical leadership, team growth, and collaboration within a distributed environment.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage a remote engineering team
Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, and career development
Set and manage expectations with other teams, management, and stakeholders
Participate in the engineering process through code and architectural reviews
Engage with internal teams, the open source community, and partners
Drive the delivery of high-quality, timely software solutions
Advocate for modern software development practices
Work on strategy and execution with the team

Requirements

Experience in leading successful, collaborative engineering teams and demonstrating the ability to solve challenging distributed systems problems.
Deep knowledge of Linux, including modern Linux cloud computing technologies such as networking, storage, containers, and Kubernetes (K8s).
Technical leadership experience and a background in software engineering are necessary prerequisites for this role.
Ability to lead, challenge, and develop engineers, positively influence the culture, facilitate technical delivery, and work with your team on strategy and execution.
Experience in high-quality microservice architectures and high-performance team leadership.
Familiarity with Linux kernel, virtualization, storage, and networking, especially in the context of complex distributed systems.
Proven experience developing talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development.
Strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
Experience programming in C and/or Go.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field.
Ability to work remotely in EMEA or the Americas, with willingness to travel 4 to 6 weeks per year for internal and external events.
