Job Description

The Engineering Director at Canonical is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing multiple engineering teams across various domains, driving technical excellence, managing talent, and shaping engineering practices to support open source software development and organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple engineering teams and develop engineering managers
  • Hire, coach, mentor, and provide career development for engineers
  • Ensure high-quality, timely delivery of projects and products
  • Implement and uphold disciplined engineering processes
  • Set and track progress against goals for speed, quality, and efficiency
  • Represent products to stakeholders, partners, and customers
  • Develop and promote engineering and organizational best practices
  • Collaborate with leadership and related product teams

Requirements

  • Pass the first round of interviews and be able to discuss specific software products that would be a good fit for your interests.
  • Ability to run a project which spans teams and time zones, including hiring and managing engineering managers and staff engineers.
  • Experience in leading multiple teams of engineers, ranging from graduate to senior levels.
  • Developing engineering managers and maintaining Canonical culture.
  • Hiring staff level engineers for specific roles such as performance and quality.
  • Coaching, mentoring, and offering career development feedback to team members.
  • Identifying and measuring indicators of team health and productivity.
  • Ensuring rounded delivery including community participation and documentation.
  • Implementing disciplined engineering processes and defending them.
  • Setting and measuring progress against benchmark goals for speed and efficiency.
  • Representing your product to stakeholders, partners, and customers.
  • Developing and evangelizing great engineering and organizational practices.
  • Planning and managing progress on agreed goals and projects.
  • Being an active part of the leadership team and collaborating with other leaders.
  • Collaborating with leads for related or dependent products.
  • Having an exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
  • Holding an undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or having a compelling narrative about an alternative path.
  • Having extensive management experience and confidence to set high expectations.
  • Having an outstanding Linux-based software engineering track record.
  • Demonstrating drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations.
  • Possessing excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Having public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Having a love of developing and growing people with a proven track record.
  • Experience in leading, coaching, and mentoring software developers.
  • Being organized and able to ensure your team delivers timely, high-quality results.
  • Being well-organized, self-starting, and able to deliver to schedule.
  • Maintaining a professional manner when interacting with colleagues, partners, and community.
  • Having advanced expertise in your own domain.
  • Being knowledgeable and passionate about software development.
  • Having solid experience working in an agile development environment.
  • Demonstrating a drive for continual learning.
  • Building trust, relationships, and confidence.
  • Being result-oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
  • Being able to travel twice a year for company events, for up to two weeks each time.
