Job Description

A Software Engineer at Canonical develops, tests, and releases improvements to the Ubuntu operating system, primarily focusing on cloud images, ensuring quality, stability, and interoperability across various environments while collaborating with a global, distributed team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and release improvements to Ubuntu on public clouds
  • Collaborate with distributed teams and cloud partners on Ubuntu image development
  • Create and manage Ubuntu images, including configuring apt and understanding deb packaging
  • Write high-quality, well-tested code in Python to add new features and fix issues
  • Debug and troubleshoot software problems to ensure stability and quality
  • Review code contributions from other engineers and discuss solutions
  • Communicate with users to understand their needs and incorporate feedback
  • Contribute to open source Python projects and engage with the open source community

Requirements

  • Excellent Python skills, with previous contributions to open source Python projects being an advantage
  • Experience in developing, testing, and releasing software improvements, specifically related to Ubuntu on public clouds
  • Experience in configuring apt, and knowledge of deb packaging and general system administration is advantageous
  • Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field
  • Extensive experience with Python on Linux
  • Interest in and experience with two or more of the following: Ubuntu Linux systems administration, continuous integration, end-system contract management, Debian packaging, working with public or on-premise clouds
  • Ability to collaborate proactively with a distributed team
  • Ability to write high-quality code with unit and functional tests, and to debug issues and produce high-quality code to fix them
  • Ability to review code produced by other engineers and discuss ideas to find good solutions
  • Willingness to work from home with the ability to travel 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events
  • Passion for the Ubuntu project and its values, and for building tools used by millions of people worldwide
  • Ability to work with a spectrum of end users, from mission-critical environments to hobbyist users, and help guide engineering best practices with all of them in mind
